Making It Hard for LA News Crews

Many residents in SoCal are being held back from their neighborhoods to see if their homes are still standing.

Fires still burn in the area and officials say the area is not safe.

But, NBC News Reporter Ellison Barber went into one resident’s home that was forced to evacuate and recovered some items and brought them to the residents outside the fire line.

While this seems like a nice gesture, it has caused issues for other Journalists who are trying to cover the story.

This memo was sent to media outlets and obtained by FTVLive:

Dear Media Partners,

We sincerely appreciate your ongoing efforts in keeping the public informed. Your dedication is invaluable.

It has come to our attention that some media personnel have been entering private properties to retrieve personal items for residents. While we recognize the well-intentioned nature of these actions, we must highlight that such activities may pose safety risks and potentially compromise the integrity of any active investigations.

We kindly remind all media representatives that access is permitted only in public areas.  We ask for your cooperation in refraining from entering private property even with the property owner’s approval, as it is against the law inside an evacuated area.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support.

It is not a Journalist job to be a retrieval service for displaced residents. If the NBC News Reporter did this for one resident, why isn’t she doing this for the thousands of other displaced people?

NBC should explain this to their field crews, although it is unbelievable that I have to type that line about a network news operation.

This Reporter’s violation of the rules can impact the coverage of all the stations in LA who are abiding by the rules and journalism ethics.
