Every Station in Orlando Won or Lost in the Feb Sweeps
It looks like every station in the Orlando market can claim they are Number 1 in the ratings.
Of course, if you look at the other way....every station lost in the ratings.
But the O-Town stations are more glass half full kind of people.
The Orlando Sentinel writes that Orlando broadcast stations can each claim victory for news performance in the February ratings period, which ended Wednesday. The stations can crow about reaching the 25-to-54 age group, which is most important to news advertisers.
CBS affiliate WKMG-Channel 6 was tops in 11 p.m. news after enjoying a huge win in prime time, thanks to the Super Bowl, the Grammys, “NCIS” and “The Big Bang Theory.”
Fox-owned WOFL-Channel 35 continued to lead at 10 p.m. after the Fox lineup enjoyed a lift from “American Idol.”
ABC affiliate WFTV-Channel 9 was the leader in early morning, at noon and at 6 p.m. WFTV often dominates the ratings, but not this month.
In a sign of how tight the competition has become, NBC affiliate WESH-Channel 2 claimed victory in the 5 p.m. hour over longtime leader WFTV — and the margin was just 100 viewers. WESH’s 4 p.m. news was the top show in that time period. WESH also highlighted its growth from a year ago: The NBC affiliate was up by at least 30 percent at 4, 5 and 6 p.m.
The February ratings period is one of the most important, but blockbuster programming can skew the results. The network that airs the Super Bowl almost certainly will win prime time. With the Super Bowl, WKMG averaged 183,100 total viewers, way ahead of the ABC lineup on WFTV with 118,900 viewers and the Fox lineup on WOFL with 78,500. NBC’s schedule collapsed in prime time, and WESH averaged 46,700 viewers.
In news, the 25-to-54 age group is the main measure. In late news, WESH was surprisingly strong despite NBC’s troubles. At 11 p.m. Monday-Friday, WKMG averaged 27,300 viewers to WESH’’s 24,400, WFTV’s 24,000 and WOFL’s 12,700.
In the age group at 10 p.m. Monday-Friday, WOFL set the pace with 20,900 viewers. It was well ahead of the WESH news on sister station WKCF-Channel 18 (with 10,700 viewers) and the WFTV news on sister station WRDQ-Channel 27 (with 8,200 viewers).
At 6 p.m. weekdays in the age group, WFTV averaged 31,100 viewers to WESH’s 28,100, WOFL’s 13,200 and WKMG’s 7,100.
At 5 p.m. in the age group, WESH averaged 19,900 viewers and edged WFTV with 19,500. WOFL drew 12,700 and WKMG had 5,900.
But at 5:30 p.m., WFTV pulled ahead with 22,100 viewers to WESH’s 21,800.
In households, the previous way of measuring the news ratings race, WFTV continued to show leadership. At 6 p.m., for instance, WFTV averaged 122,800 homes to WESH’s 84,400, WKMG’s 32,800 and WOFL’s 20,900.
At 11 p.m. Monday-Friday, WFTV averaged 74,600 homes to WKMG’s 66,600, WESH’s 42,800 and WOFL’s 18,500. It was a sign that WFTV remains popular with many viewers even if the station placed third in the 25-to-54 age group.
The new ratings period started Thursday, and without some of February’s marquee programming, the results could be quite different. Stay tuned.
