KXAN (Austin) Sports Reporter Jonathan Thomas has left the Nexstar station and the TV business altogether.

He posted the news to Twitter (X):

Thomas was at the station 5 years.

Looking back on the people who exited the business in 2024, many of them only worked in TV news for 4 to 5 years, before bowing out.

It used to be that people worked decades before leaving the business or retired. The fact that so many are leaving after just a few years, is another growing problem for the TV news business.

The crazy hours for so little pay, has people exiting much earlier than the past.

I expect you will see more of this in 2025.

Stations are cutting staff and asking the current staff to pick up the slack. Mix that in with the pitiful salary and many are saying it’s just not worth it.

I believe 2025 is be a major inflection point for local TV news. I think this is the year we’ll see if TV news has a future.
